With the change in seasons, it’s time to think about the clothes you need for the next. As opposed to what the clothes magazines and fashion gurus tell you.
And now we’re in the midst of a pandemic it may be harder to buy inexpensive clothes manufactured overseas. Your work may be precarious, so will need to think more carefully to get the best value for money.
Alexandria Blaelock, author of Ms Blaelock’s Book of Signature Wardrobe Planning says, “most of the garments on the fashion essentials lists aren’t essential. Only you can decide what it is you need.”
Here are Blaelock’s tips for deciding what clothes you need:
- Activities: Think about what you do in an average week. If that’s go to work, and stay home watching tv, you just need a work uniform of sorts and some comfy lounge clothes. Probably not a taffeta ballgown.
- Places: Where do you spend most of your time? If you work for a big corporation, your work clothes are likely to be more formal than if you work in a small shipping company. And you probably don’t need a sequinned parakeet shirt no matter how cute it is.
- Durability: Everyday clothes and shoes, in nondescript colours (e.g., navy, brown, grey, black) won’t stand out. Buy hard-wearing fabrics in “classic” lines, and look after them so they will last a long time.
- Practicality: Functional clothes that keep you warm, allow freedom of movement, and can be worn to more than one place for more than one activity.
- Frivolity: Allow yourself a few fun pieces to take the doom out of your basic wardrobe. You may tire of them more quickly, so get the cheapest items you can.
These five tips help you decide what clothes you need for a long-term, low-cost wardrobe.
